Reflections

For me, there were probably a few learning points and experiences that I brought away from this class. Specifically, the main thing was that I finally gained an understanding about what the ADDIE model was all about, and that it is much, much more than just 5 letters. On a larger perspective, the course showed me how much about instructional skills and techniques that I don't know!

I had come into this course not knowing what to expect. Being a former teacher, I assumed (incorrectly, I might add) that I would hear a repeat of many points that I had heard previously. However, I realised I could not be more wrong as the lessons progressed. I realised that there was a lot more to be learned as the instructors went through various theories and activities that allowed me to explore and experiment with new techniques. The openness of the coursemates also created a good atmosphere to help learning, as no one was afraid to ask questions and crack jokes once in a while to help lighten the mood.

The instructors were also helpful in suggesting different ways a technique to be used during the exercises and that helped me to explore and understand the theories better. But one thing does stand out; Everyday I was repeatedly reminded everyday how much more I could learn about instructional theories and techniques there are out there, and it has gone some way in reminding me about my interest in teaching.

Working on the project allowed the team and I to put the ADDIE system into practice, and it helped us to think through the various steps to developing the curriculum for. For me, this helped to point out how important it was to understand important issues in developing things like task assessments, and setting learning objectives. On the sidelines, I think I also gained a little more information that I needed on the new Police Coast Guard boats than I needed! :) The team I was part of worked well together, in my view. I think the group's attitude and willingness to give and accept different views and feedback was a huge factor in developing the materials. Being a humourous bunch also no doubt helped with the learning!

Overall, I found the course to be hugely beneficial, even though on hindsight I probably only really absorbed about 60-70% of the topics taught. The instructors were very clear in their explanations and I think it was probably the lack of time that prevented them from really getting into some of the topics. The instructors were also very able in handling the various questions and issues that popped up. However, I felt that the pace of the lessons were a bit inconsistent. Some topics were dwelled on for a bit too long, while others were barrelled through. In any case, I believe it would take much longer for anyone to fully absorb and appreciate all the topics that we went through.

In any case, the course was really helpful. Thanks for all the fish! :)
